Kennen vs. Wissen: Two German Ways to Say “I Know”
Kennen or wissen? Learn the simple rule for “I know” in German: people and places vs. facts. With examples, conjugation, common mistakes and a mini quiz.

Ich kenne Anna. Ich weiß, wo sie wohnt. In English, both sentences use the same verb: “I know”. In German, you need two different verbs, kennen and wissen. If you speak Spanish or French, you already know this idea: conocer / saber and connaître / savoir work the same way. In this article you will learn the simple rule, the grammar behind it, and the mistakes to avoid.
Kennen: to be familiar with
Kennen means you have met someone, been somewhere or experienced something. It always takes a direct object in the accusative.
- Ich kenne Anna seit drei Jahren. (I have known Anna for three years.)
- Kennst du Berlin? (Do you know Berlin?)
- Wir kennen dieses Restaurant nicht. (We don't know this restaurant.)
- Sie kennt das Lied. (She knows the song.)
Wissen: to know a fact
Wissen means you have a piece of information in your head. You almost always use it in one of three patterns.
- With a dass-clause: Ich weiß, dass er krank ist. (I know that he is sick.)
- With a question word or ob: Weißt du, wo er wohnt? (Do you know where he lives?) / Ich weiß nicht, ob sie kommt. (I don't know if she is coming.)
- With a pronoun like das, es, alles, nichts: Das weiß ich nicht. (I don't know that.) / Er weiß alles. (He knows everything.)
How to conjugate kennen and wissen
Both verbs are irregular. Wissen changes its stem in the singular, and both verbs change their vowel in the past tense.
| Person | kennen | wissen |
|---|---|---|
| ich | kenne | weiß |
| du | kennst | weißt |
| er / sie / es | kennt | weiß |
| wir | kennen | wissen |
| ihr | kennt | wisst |
| sie / Sie | kennen | wissen |
Past tense: kannte and wusste. Perfekt: hat gekannt and hat gewusst. Example: Ich wusste das nicht. (I didn't know that.)
Kennen or wissen? Quick comparison
| Use kennen | Use wissen |
|---|---|
| Ich kenne deinen Bruder. | Ich weiß, dass du einen Bruder hast. |
| Kennst du Madrid? | Weißt du, wo Madrid liegt? |
| Ich kenne den Film. | Ich weiß nicht, wie der Film endet. |
| Wir kennen uns schon lange. | Das weiß ich nicht. |
When both verbs are possible
With some nouns, both verbs work, but the meaning changes slightly. Kennen says you are familiar with it. Wissen says you have the information ready.
- Ich kenne den Weg. (I am familiar with the route.) / Ich weiß den Weg. (I know how to get there.)
- Ich kenne die Antwort. / Ich weiß die Antwort. (Both are common. The second sounds more natural for a quiz answer.)
- Ich weiß seine Adresse. (I have his address.) / Ich kenne seine Adresse. (I am familiar with it.)
With people, only kennen works. You can never say Ich weiß Anna.

Common mistakes
- Wissen with a person. Wrong: Ich weiß Anna. Correct: Ich kenne Anna.
- Kennen with a dass-clause. Wrong: Ich kenne, dass er krank ist. Correct: Ich weiß, dass er krank ist.
- Kennen with a question word. Wrong: Kennst du, wo er wohnt? Correct: Weißt du, wo er wohnt?
- Kennen for languages. Say Ich kann Deutsch or Ich spreche Deutsch, not Ich kenne Deutsch.
- Wrong spelling. The forms ich weiß and er weiß are written with ß, and ich wissen does not exist.
